History:.

The history of Szczecin port is as long as the history of the city itself. It might be difficult to document whether the city gave foundation to the port or the port to the city. The existence of the port in very early times has been proved with several findings e.g. a shipwreck of a Slovian boat claimed to be from the end of IXth century. Moreover, the boats drilled from single tree trunks have been discovered in areas adjacent to Szczecin; their age has been determined for 1500 years.

In early Middle Ages, the time of medieval town existence, the port was situated on the left bank of Odra river, in a small bay nearby the town foot, close to the Sovereign's seat. As the water depth there was about 1,5 m that time and the ship carrying capacity ranged from 2 up to 5 tons it created sufficient conditions for the ships to enter the port. On base of various archeological sources it has been proved that that time trade exchange was expansive and developing well. The goods, subject to exchange, included bulk cargo or general merchandise or luxury goods. In particular the exchanged goods comprised corn, meat, herrings, leather, salt, honey, metal products, stone or timber. There were miscellaneous luxury objects of imported origin found in arheological findings around Szczecin; they were imported not only from Baltic region and North Sea regions but also e.g. they were proved to have from Arabian origins.

It appeared that times that the depth of the port as well as the size of harbour were insufficient to meet the needs. In XIII th century the port got moved nearer, towards the main Odra sream and finally located along the left bank of Odra river, below the city walls. From the south it was demarcated with a bridge "Most Dlugi" and on the north with another bridge "Most Klodny" - the name of the latter came from a name
