History:.

In the Middle Ages Szczecin belonged to Hanseatic Cities Association and maintained its contacts with Baltic ports and its hinterland in Odra and Warta river-basins. From XVIth century the interest in west Europe markets increased, mainly in markets of England, Nitherlands and France. In that time, the number of Szczecin shipowners shipping routes to North Sea amounted up to 100 ships per year. Mainly the corn, animal skins and timber was exported while herrings, salt and wine - imported..

The Port Authority of Szczecin took an important place in City Council just from the Middle Ages times, where the City Council gradually took over the rights and authorisation tha had once been beyond its competence. In the middle of XIVth century the City bought the right to collect customs charges from the Prince, and further on within XVIIth century took the rules over the confraternities of port workers. However, for some longer time the Princes retained their right to collect charges for closing and opening the clog for ships coming in or out.
