History:.

The damages were so serious that the first ships entering Szczecin port after the war were manually handled, even the bulk cargo e.g. the coal.

Normal operation of the port was made diffucult by numerous shipwrecks, harbour slime and mines in water basins. Part of the port was still occupied by Russian army; some of Szczecin port quays were handed over for Polish administration not earlier than in 1954 while in Swinoujscie even as late as in 1992. Within several years after the war, the administration of port areas was carried out by several institutions, responsible for different port activity spheres. Much of work in the port was performed by private companies or co-operatives. By the time of about 1950 all the private initiatives were abolished or incorporated into the organisation structures of state owned enterprises; later on the administration of the port got centralised.

The characteristic feature of the whole post-war period until today, has been the continuous development of the port in Swinoujscie. The development and expansion of technical port infrastructure (mainly for bulk cargo handling) the handling turnover of Swinoujscie port has reached the level of as much as half of the whole turnover of Authority of Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports. An essential contribution to that high level handling effects has undoubtfully the Sea Ferry Terminal operation, being constantly modernised and improved.
