Guests from Lithuania to visit Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports

On 27.04.2011 at the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority a meeting was held involving representatives of our company and the Port Authority of Klaipeda and cargo handling companies operating in the Lithuanian port.

Participants of the meeting included Ms. Loreta Zakareviciane, the Ambassador of Lithuania to Poland, Mr. Tadeusz Macioł, the Honorary Consul of Poland in Klaipeda, and Mr. Wiesław Wierzchoś, the Honorary Consul of Lithuania in Szczecin.
During a short presentation, representatives of the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority emphasised opportunities for extending cooperation between ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście and the port of Klaipeda as well as Lithuanian and Polish maritime companies, in particular ferry operators.
The topic of establishing a ferry service between Świnoujście and Klaipeda prevailed during the meeting. As regards the service, authorities of the two ports signed a Letter of Intent on 30th April 2009. Not much has changed since that time. However, trends reducing heavy vehicle traffic on EU roads and shifting road transport to water have become stronger, which creates new and large opportunities for new ferry links.
- We are interested in establishing the Klaipeda - Świnoujście ferry service. Both ports have necessary infrastructure to service cargo transported by ferries. The main issue is to find an operator which establishes a regular ferry line, said Jarosław Siergiej, the Chairman of Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority.
Eugenijus Gentvilas, the Director General at the Port Authority of Klaipeda, referred to ferry operators by noticing that the number of ferry lines on the Baltic was decreasing. In his opinion, it was the result of cost reduction measures.
A slightly different concept was presented by Honorary Consul of Lithuania in Szczecin Wiesław Wierzchoś who suggested the establishing of a ferry link between Klaipeda and Sasnitz with a call at Świnoujście.
Participants to the meeting agreed that further analysis was necessary to provide a comprehensive picture of the cargo flow. This should be the basis for making a decision on further development.
The Chairman of the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority declared his support for attracting EU funding necessary for such analysis.
Concluding the meeting, the Chairman of the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority encouraged Lithuanian companies to invest in our ports and declared professional support at all stages of the cooperation.
After the visit, guests went to the Port of Szczecin and than to Świnoujście to see the ferry terminal and the site of the LNG terminal.
