The Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority has its new Development Strategy

The horizon of the Szczecin-Świnoujście Seaports Strategy has been set at 2027. It has its practical dimension since it covers two complete EU budget periods. It is related to the fact that EU funding accounts for a significant part of the investment in the ports. The new Strategy provides for investment of nearly PLN900 million.

At the moment, the annual cargo handling in the two ports is about 23 million tons. According to the new Development Strategy, it is expected to grow to reach the target level of 42 million tons per year in 2027. For many years now, bulk cargo has accounted for the largest part of cargo handled, including coal, ore, grain and other bulk, such as aggregate, wood chips, fertilizers, and tar, and general cargo (e.g. containers – wood pulp, fertilizers in bags, frozen fish). The main goal of the Strategy is to preserve the universal nature of the two ports. The objective of the Seaports Authority is to turn Szczecin and Świnoujście into leading ports in the south Baltic Sea. It should be achieved by creating conditions supporting development in the ports.

To meet the goals set it is necessary to improve access to the ports from sea and land. Since the size of vessels used is steadily growing, improving navigation parameters in the ports is one of priorities included in the new Strategy. This includes modernizing the Świnoujście-Szczecin fairway by dredging it to 12.5 m, and the approach to the port of Świnoujście to 14.5 and 17 m. Strategic priorities also include extending the port area and commercial utilization of new land. 

The Ports Authority focuses on integrating the port complex within the sea-land South-North transport corridor. However, meeting this goal depends to a large extend on external parties, e.g. the Maritime Office for dredging the fairway, General Directorate of Roads and Motorways for modernizing S3 expressway,  PKP Polish Railway for modernizing railway mains of CE59 and E59, and Cities of Szczecin and Świnoujście for improving road access to the two ports.

Other strategic goals include the development of inland navigation, city-port partnerships and tourism, as well as promotion. 

The Ports Authority is prepared to implement goals within its competences. As regards the implementation of other goals, it provides its active support to other institutions. All this has been undertaken to make Szczecin and Świnoujście leading ports on the South Baltic Sea by 2027.
