The organization began in 1991 as the result of a meeting of 27 European ports whose main objective was common activity targeting the attraction of a greater number of cruise boats to ports of northern and western Europe. At present over 70 ports of the Baltic, Norwegian and Northern Seas belong to Cruise Europe.

Cruise Europe not only promotes member ports but also keeps close contact with excursion lines in such matters as their future position in the market, safety and environmental protection and the improvement of quality of the infrastructure offered by ports.
