The Ports of Szczecin and Swinoujscie together constitute the largest centre for servicing dry bulk cargo on the Polish coast. Major cargo types transhipped and stored include coal, iron ore, as well as salt, coke, concentrates, fertilisers, scrap metal, raw materials for the construction industry, liquid pitch and tar.Cargo handling provided by a highly specialised terminal accounts for nearly 50% Polish coal export and 100% import of iron ore.
In the port of Swinoujscie these commodities are handled at fully mechanised storage yards of 120000 m² next to quays equipped with cranes. Iron ore is one of major cargo types generating the annual handling volume in the port of Swinoujscie. Two cranes with capacity of 25 t and 40 t respectively enable a daily transhipment rate of up to 25000 tons. This figure grows year by year.A strong advantage is also the possibility of servicing iron ore carriers of 13.2 m in draught and 270 m long. The ports of Szczecin and Swinoujscie also play a leading role in the transhipment of coal. The specialized terminals contribute to the handling capacity at the level of 10 million tons per year. Coal is the main cargo served in the port of Szczecin. The coal terminal in Szczecin has a coal tip with loading capacity of 1000 t/h, cranes with lifting capacity up to 16 t and receiving area capable of storing 200000 tons. The coal terminal in Swinoujscie is equipped with two coal tips, coal thawing, receiving area capable of storing 700000 tons of load and loading system with loading capacity of 2000 tons per hour.
![]() Specialized terminals for transhipment and storage of grain and animal forage are situated in Szczecin. The largest on the Polish coast grain silo EWA of 75000 m³ guarantees efficient sanitary control as well as transhipment, storage, weighing, and drying of grain. Moreover three other silos are situated in the port of Szczecin. Total capacity of four silos is 70000 t. Both ports have the potential for servicing liquid cargo - oil products, vegetable oils and molasses.
