Location


The container terminal in Świnoujście will be built on the eastern side of the breakwater that protects the existing external harbour and in the direct vicinity of the land part of the LNG terminal. The natural boundary dividing the two areas is the eastern breakwater and Ku Morzu Street. 


On the land part, the investment area is designated for road and rail access with the necessary infrastructure and is located on undeveloped land. The sea area intended for the terminal is undeveloped.

The advantages of the terminal's location relate to the location of the Szczecin-Świnoujście port complex itself: 

  • it is located on the shortest route connecting Scandinavia with Central and Southern Europe and on the sea route connecting Russia and Finland with Western Europe via the Baltic Sea;
  • is the first port after the passage through the Danish Straits in the southern Baltic Sea and can ensure the calls of ocean-going vessels in direct intercontinental services;
  • it is the closest port to the Czech Republic, Slovakia and eastern Germany, and in particular to the Berlin-Brandenburg region - which means the cheapest sea delivery for a large part of the Polish market and in transit services for the countries that are the hinterland of the Szczecin-Świnoujście ports;
  • an asset is the connection with the inland waterway network to Berlin, and further -with the European waterway system;
  • location in the axis of the Baltic - Adriatic corridor as the base infrastructure of the TEN-T network;
  • after the completion of the extension of the S3 expressway, the port and container terminal will be free of congestion in road traffic;
  • location of the container terminal in the immediate vicinity of the LNG terminal offers the possibility of direct bunkering of vessels calling at the container terminal.


Access to the container terminal and connection with the hinterland

Water side access



Access from the sea to the planned terminal is via the Pomeranian Bay - there are no tides in the area, and the Świnoujście port is ice-free throughout the year.
Approach Track - Access to the planned container terminal is provided by a dredged western approach track with a technical depth of 14.5 m, allowing vessels with a maximum draught of 13.0 m to pass through. Ultimately, after the reconstruction of the northern approach to a technical depth of 17.0m, vessels with a draught of up to 15.5m will be able to call at the terminal. Therefore, all the hydrotechnical structures: quays, a turning basin and an entrance track to the port are designed for the target technical depth of 17.0 m.

Access from the land side

The external port in Świnoujście, apart from its direct contact with the sea, has convenient access from the land side.  The national road No. 93 is located in the immediate vicinity, as is national road No. 3 in the E65 European route network, which connects Scandinavian countries with the Mediterranean basin as part of the Baltic-Adriatic corridor in the TEN-T network. 


The same is true for rail link no. 401, which, via the E59 and C-E 59 lines, gains a direct connection to the largest industrial centres in the country and beyond.


Road access to the terminal: takes into account the reconstruction of the S-3 expressway (implemented under the project "Construction of the S-3 road in Świnoujście - Troszyn section"). Connection of the terminal with the planned S3 expressway - via the Łunowo junction. 


The construction of the S3 Świnoujście - Troszyn section is necessary to complete the entire nearly 500 km long road from the Baltic Sea to the Czech border. The economic significance of this part of the S3 is important because of the connection between the seaport and the terminals in Świnoujście: ferry terminal, LNG terminal and planned container terminal, and further to the south of the country and Europe. The modernised S3 will take traffic away from the terminal and connect it with the road network of the hinterland by linking it with the main arteries, e.g. the A6/S6, S10, A4, A2. The entire route is expected to be ready in 2024.


Railway access to the terminal takes into account the modernisation of railway infrastructure (implemented under the project "Improving railway access to sea ports in Szczecin and Świnoujście").  


Railway connection of  the planned terminal is ensured by line no. 401, which through the E59 and C-E59 railway trunk line gains a direct connection with the largest industrial centres in the country and abroad.


Technical data of the terminal

Pier Surface area


The area of the pier should accommodate all facilities necessary for the operation of the container terminal in Świnoujście to achieve a handling capacity of 2.0 million TEU per year. 
All terminal facilities will be located on the pier facing the sea. Only the facilities providing road and rail access together with the necessary infrastructure will be located in the land part.


Quayside / vessel


The length of the mooring line assumed by SSSA is about 1,300 m, as it is necessary for simultaneous service of 3 vessels: 

  • 2 ocean-going vessels and
  • 1 feeder vessel


Land part


The onshore part will accommodate only facilities providing road and rail access together with the necessary infrastructure.


Suprastructure 


The equipment of the container pier with handling facilities and equipment will depend on the needs specified by the investor, but must be sufficient to meet the general criteria indicated by SSSA.
Transshipment data

Transhipment potential

It is assumed that the target level of transhipments at the terminal will be 1.5 million TEU, and the annual transhipment capacity will be 2.0 million TEU. 

It is possible to divide the investment into two stages: 

Stage I: infrastructure enabling annual transhipment at the level of 750 thousand TEU (theoretical capacity of 1 million TEU, i.e. 50% of the target transhipment capacity)

Stage II: Infrastructure enabling annual handling at the level of 1.5 million TEU (theoretical capacity of 2 million TEU)


Intermodal

Intermodal transport is becoming the future of rail freight transport, and in order to remain competitive, ports are placing a strong emphasis on the development of intermodal transport services. Actions aimed at developing intermodal transport are in line with the pro-environmental policy of the European Commission, which in 2011 set a target indicating that by 2030 30% of road freight transport over distances greater than 300 km should be shifted to other modes of transport. By 2050, this should be more than 50%.


It is therefore assumed that intermodal transport will also be possible at the container terminal.

This will be possible thanks to the rail infrastructure prepared in the inland part of the terminal, as well as rail investments at the back of the ports - modernisation of the E59 and C-E59 railway lines.

Environmental protection

It is assumed that the negative impact of the deepwater container terminal in Świnoujście on the surroundings and the environment will be limited to the maximum extent possible, both in the period of construction and operation of the terminal. It is recommended to use technology and equipment with the lowest possible level of emissions, in accordance with the so-called "green terminal" concept.
