Completion of investment in REBUILDING ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE IN PORTS OF SZCZECIN AND ŚWINOUJŚCIE

On 22nd May 2014, within the renovated road at the Egipskie Quay, in front of THPV Bembridge, the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority held an official event on completion of the investment in rebuilding road infrastructure in ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście, a project implemented in the general and bulk cargo handling areas.

The project ends modernization of all roads within the port, including those next to the cargo handling area in the Commercial Port of Świnoujście, which was completed in September last year.

In general, seaports have been implementing consecutive investment projects to improve efficiency in servicing current and prospective clients. The same applies to the Ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście. For several years now, the ports have been implementing a comprehensive investment programme, and a large portion of finance for the programme comes from EU funds.

The funding from the Ports Authority and EU financial support provided for rebuilding and modernizing of the road system.  The rebuilding of road infrastructure in ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście included 9 km of roads and infrastructure, such as power supply and rainwater drainage, as well as displacing certain power, sewage and gas networks.

The investment started in April 2011, and its completion was scheduled in June 2014. Intensive effort by the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority and Budimex, the contractor, and close cooperation with companies operating in the investment area led to early completion of works. It is also worth mentioning that the rebuilding of roads in Świnoujście improving inbound and outbound traffic in the port was completed 7 months before its planned completion. It included rebuilding of 1.3 km stretch of Nowoartyleryjska Street and Kasztanowa and Barlickiego streets (0.4 km each). The project also included rebuilding of a flyover along Nowoartyleryjska Street close to the junction with Barlickiego Street.

The total project cost is PLN63.3 million. So far, the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority attracted EU funding at the level of PLN36.8 million. However, by the final settlement of the project the amount of the EU support is expected to increase to PLN42.8 million.

This above investment together with another one which starts in July this year and involves building parking places, especially that the latter improves port access infrastructure from the hinterland, the traffic in the two ports should become not only more efficient but also safer, both on the way to the ports and within the ports. Therefore, modern heavy vehicle traffic will enjoy better access to and service quality in the ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście.  New parking places for trucks and individual cars, roads widened from 6 to 7 m as well as higher permissible axle load for carriageways and parking places from current 40-60 to 115 kN are only some effects of the investment.

Additionally, in the future modernized Nowoartyleryjska Street in Świnoujście will provide the main access to the external port of Świnoujście connecting already operated and new port areas.
