Investments in improving the quality of railway routes to the ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście are closer and closer

The investment "Improving rail access to seaports in Szczecin and Świnoujście" is almost ready. PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. are finishing jointly with the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority. project worth about PLN 1.5 billion - co-financed by the EU CEF "Connecting Europe" instrument.

Almost a hundred kilometers of new track

As part of the investment, 96 kilometers of tracks will be modernized (Szczecin - 61, Świnoujście - 35) and almost 84 kilometers of traction network (approx. 50 km in Szczecin and 34 km in Świnoujście). The large scale of works at the stations is evidenced by the replacement of as many as 285 turnouts (Szczecin - 177 and Świnoujście - 108). The level of safety will be increased by the installation of modern railway traffic control devices and the reconstruction of 22 rail-road crossings (12 in Szczecin and 10 in Świnoujście). In Szczecin, the bridge over the Parnica River and three railway viaducts will be rebuilt.

It has already been done

Most of the works were completed at the Szczecin Central Port station. About 50 of the 60 km of new tracks are laid. 126 out of 177 turnouts were installed, enabling a smooth change of track. The ground for the construction of further tracks is being prepared and strengthened, which will enable the efficient and safe passage of heavier freight trains. The contractor is assembling poles and supporting structures on which the new traction network will be suspended. Railway traffic control devices are installed. The modernization of engineering facilities will ensure efficient and safe transport of goods to and from the port.

A new five-kilometer railway line was built in the port of Szczecin. Ostrów Grabowski communicated, including container wharf with railways leading to and from the Szczecin-Świnoujście port complex.

In Świnoujście, out of 35 km of new tracks, the last few are being laid. Works between Lubiewo (Międzyzdroje) and Warnow stations and in the Euroterminal area are in progress. Over 100 out of 108 turnouts have already been built. In the vicinity of the port of Świnoujście, a second track is being built between Świnoujście Przytór and Świnoujście stations, which will increase capacity, ensuring the passage of more trains.

Passengers will also benefit

Thanks to the railway port investment, travelers have gained better access to new platforms at the Świnoujście Warszów and Świnoujście Port stops, as well as the Świnoujście station. New shelters and benches as well as bright lighting were installed there. Amenities are also provided for people with mobility difficulties. Special ramps have been installed for them. The road from the Świnoujście Port stop to the Świnoujście station is ready.

Ultimately, the investment will allow longer and heavier trains to reach the ports. There will be 750-meter trains with a load of 221 kN per axle. Thanks to the elimination of bottlenecks, freight warehouses will be handled faster and more efficiently. The reloading capacity of the stations in Szczecin and Świnoujście will increase. The ports will accept and clear more cargo, which will improve the competitiveness of freight transport and the potential of the ports themselves, and will positively affect the economic development of the region.

End of works this year. Completion of works is planned for mid-2022.
