Vessel of 80 thousand DWT in Szczecin

On 1st November, the largest gross tonnage vessel ever called at the port of Szczecin. The ship originating from San Lorenzo, Argentina, called at the port of Szczecin on her voyage from Riga where she delivered about 50 thousand tonnes of cargo.

The kamsarmax bulk carrier (the largest vessel that can call at port of Kamsar, Guinea, length overall larger than panamax). M/v Ranger of Orion Bulkers, Germany, 82 thousand tonnes, 229 m in length and 32 m in width.

The draught of m/v Ranger is 14.4 m, and it could call at Szczecin partially loaded only. Since the ship was to be loaded with grain, she moored in the southern part of the Słowackie quay and the following day she will be towed to target location close to a modern flat storage warehouse operated by Elewator EWA in the northern part of the Slowackie Quay.  ‘Due to autumn weather loading may even take 7 days. In case of rain, it is necessary to discontinue loading.’ – said Agnieszka Galus, Managing Director, Elewator EWA Sp. o.o.

Due to a limited draught, partially loaded ships are frequent in Szczecin. They could take or deliver more cargo provided the depth of the Świnoujście-Szczecin fairway was larger. The visit of m/v Ranger to Szczecin has shown that 12.5m in draught is a must for Szczecin as a response to market demand.
