Information on the collection of waste from ships

Introduced on February 1, 2004 by the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority S.A. the ship waste collection system ensures that waste generated by ships is managed in accordance with the law.

The system for collecting waste from ships operates on the basis of the Act of 12 May 2022 on port facilities for receiving waste from ships (Journal of Laws of 2022, item 1250) and is obligatory, which means that all entities operating in the seaport in Szczecin and the seaport in Świnoujście and all ships using the berths located within the limits of both ports are obliged to use it. 

Pursuant to the provisions of the above act and the relevant regulations of the Minister of Infrastructure, ZMPSiŚ S.A. developed the "Ship waste management plan in the seaport of Szczecin” and the “Ship waste management plan in the seaport of Świnoujście". The plans were agreed with the users of the port and approved by the Marshal of the Zachodniopomorskie Voivodeship with a decision issued for the seaport in Szczecin and for the seaport in Świnoujście. The plans constituting the basis for the operation of the ship waste collection system are available at the Energy and Operations Department of the ZMPSiŚ S.A.

The operation of the ship waste collection system in the ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście prevents indirect pollution of the Baltic Sea. Pollution from ships discharged into the sea and port waters harms living resources and aquatic ecosystems, destroying their ecological and aesthetic values, and poses a threat to human health and life.

By delivering ship waste and cargo residues to port reception facilities available in our ports, we have a chance to preserve the irreplaceable value of the water environment of the Baltic Sea area and its unique hydrographic and ecological properties.
